how big are those sample docs 500kb 600kb? Acrobat reader 6 keeps crashing and causing firefox to lock up. I don't have enough clean memory or something. I think this could be a problem later. |
Well, I don't have anything to do with the digitizing process, but the first one I checked ( "Mrs Mary Edison . . . Cannot invent . . ." ) is a 120 kb jpg. I dont' know why your acrobat plugin is coming up. It is shown in frames... with the search nav.
here's a straight link to the image: http://edison.rutgers.edu/images/ac/ac0086.jpg
Points taken on the circles and the nav.... here's a couple more tries, but not sure if I changed the contrast enough with the circles:
changes nav to white with drop shadow, and gray line above and below nav; saturated bluish color more and circles less:

same nav, but outlines between each link (more extreme on saturation differences...?)

Personally I'm liking v2... _________________ "There are two kinds of people in the world: Those who love chocolate, and communists." -- Leslie Moak Murray |

| On first glance I liked layout 1, better, but I think layout 2 would be more usable, since those images are links. The designs along the left as you scroll are a nice design touch most designers don't bother with, and kinda sets your design apart. The one problem with layout 2 is it's very heavy on whitespace - it should probably crop the left bar where there's light content like this, and let that nice vertical design show on more content-heavy pages (presumably, the majority of the site...). |

I like the color the circles bring to the design. To make them look less like they should be clicked on, I'd suggest putting something layered across the green background over the top of the circles so that it's obvious they're part of the background. For example, the "telephone trousers" text (or whatever it says) that is currently behind the circles could be moved to the front.
Or, you could go ahead and link them to stuff and make them easter eggs. _________________ I like my fonts like I like my coffee: bold and condensed. |
