What does System Restore do? I thought it was basically a roll-back of the registry, but a friend of mine just did it and some programs he had deleted seemed to reappear.

You can get a good idea of what it does by checking the file list - %windir%\system32\restore\FileList.xml

okay.... that gives me a very vague idea, but to paraphrase Austin Powers "XML isn't my bag, baby."

I'm having a hard time deciphering what I'm looking at.

Well, there's a Files section with Include and Exclude sections under that. Same for Directories. And there's a section for included file extensions after that.

HTH.

Okay. Let's take the Files section for example.

Code:
-
   <FILES>
-
   <Exclude>
<REC>%windir%\system.ini</REC>
<REC>%windir%\tasks\desktop.ini</REC>
<REC>%windir%\win.ini</REC>
<REC>*:\AUTOEXEC.BAT</REC>
<REC>*:\CONFIG.MSI</REC>
<REC>*:\CONFIG.SYS</REC>
</Exclude>
-
   <Include>
<REC>c:\placeholder\ph.dll</REC>
</Include>
</FILES>

That seems bass-ackwards to me. Why include a placeholder, which I assume is nothing, and exclude the things that look important?

Those files really aren't very important for XP. Remember, it's an NT kernel, not a 9x kernel. It may read those files, but I don't think it'll cause trouble if they disappear. Also, they can be modified by applications, and you don't want those changes automatically overwritten.

My onboard touch pad has stopped working and I can't do a safe start.
Any ideas on these two problems.
